Oman Air today joined a growing number of Middle East airlines planning to offer OnAir’s inflight passenger communications services, which includes mobile phone and BlackBerry usage, as well as Internet access. From 2009, Oman Air passengers will be able to use their mobile phones and BlackBerry-type devices to send and receive text messages, emails including attachments, and to make and receive mobile phone calls during flights. They will also be able to use laptops and the seat-back inflight entertainment screen to access the Internet and use webmail and instant messaging. The International Air Transport Association has declared that the association made a profit of $5.6bn in 2007. Strong traffic growth of 7.4 per cent was a key component. International passenger traffic (RPKs) increased 7.4% in 2007, up 1.5 points over 5.9% growth recorded in 2006, according to IATA, which announced full-year traffic figures recently. Average load factor was 77% last year, up 1 point from 2006 and an all-time record. "This trend will likely end in 2008 as demand growth is forecast to slow to 5% while capacity rises 5.2%," IATA said
